DESIGN A LOGO FOR PLYMOUTH SOUND & ESTUARIES EUROPEAN MARINE SITE
A competition has been launched to design a logo for the “Plymouth Sound and Estuaries
European Marine Site” with a cash prize of £800 being offered to the winner. Entries are
being invited under three categories, with the best of each category winning £100. The
overall winner will see their winning design used on displays, leaflets and signboards
throughout the area.
The logo competition has been launched through a partnership between Tamar Estuaries
Consultative Forum, National Marine Aquarium, Marine Institute University of Plymouth and
Marine Biological Association.
“Plymouth Sound and Estuaries has some of Europe’s finest marine habitats and is therefore
designated as a European Marine Site” explained Cdr Carl Necker, Queens Harbour Master
and Chair of the Tamar Estuaries Consultative Forum. “The Tamar Estuaries Consultative
Forum, as the managing body for this site, is keen to raise awareness of this important
natural asset and a clear identity for the site will help.”
The competition is open to all, with entries being judged in three categories. “Anyone can
have a go” explained Kaja Curry, Coastal Planning Coordinator of the Tamar Estuaries
Consultative Forum. “Entries will be considered under the three categories of 16 years and
under; further education students and an open category. You can have up to three entries
and entries must be received by Monday 6th June 2011” she explained.
Paul Cox, of the National Marine Aquarium said “we are extremely privileged to have this
fabulous natural feature right on our doorstep and we are now looking for help in trying to
capture the wonderful diversity of the European Marine Site into one easily identifiable
image. The logo will need to reflect everything from the open waters and underwater rocky
reefs of Plymouth Sound to the intertidal mudflats and saltmarshes of our estuaries. It’s
going to be tough call but we’re confident that someone will be able to meet the challenge.”
Prof Martin Attrill, Director of the Marine Institute University of Plymouth, explained that the
idea was not just to reflect the wildlife, but also our reliance on it; “the marine environment of
Plymouth Sound and Estuaries is also extremely important to the local economy and
communities. It offers opportunities for recreation such as sailing and diving, for commerce
through all the shipping coming in and out of the port and for defence activities. Without a
healthy marine ecosystem all this would not be possible, so it is vital that we raise
awareness of how we can safeguard this important asset”.
Jon Parr, Deputy Director of the Marine Biological Association added that “It’s a reflection of
the quality and diversity of the local marine environment that we have one of the world’s
highest concentrations of marine scientists. We are always looking for new ways to share
our knowledge with the public and this new logo will certainly help."
Entries must be submitted electronically by Monday 6th June 2011. Full details are available
