CORNISH DESIGNER TO BE FEATURED ON TONIGHT’S GRAND DESIGNS
An Interior Designer, and her beautiful new home, is going to be the star of tonight’s Grand Designs, on Channel 4 at 9pm, 20 October 2010
Kathryn Tyler is the founder of Linea Studio, and Interior Design Consultancy, which she set up in 2004. She is also on the board of Cornwall Design Forum, which is part of the South West Design Forum. Kathryn’s clients include the RSPB, Falmouth College of Art and Truro High School.
Kathryn said: “I am exceptionally lucky that I have been able to design and build my own home. I have always been fascinated by modernist architecture and had been accumulating mid-century furniture for a number of years in the hope that I would one day have a big enough home to put it all in. When my parents realised there was a right of way onto the land at the bottom of their garden, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to design a house for the site and build a home there.”
She applied to be on the Channel 4 show as a way to document the building process, and her experience of managing refurbishment projects in the past was invaluable when it came to realistic scheduling and planning. Her expertise in Interior Design came in towards the end of the project, when she could use her experience and knowledge of products, fittings and suppliers to get the look that she desired.
She comments: “From the outset I was learning something new everyday and my builders were incredibly accommodating and informative about what they were doing and why, so it was a great education at the same time. I always had a vision of how the house would look and it was strange but liberating not having a client that I needed to present to or agree finishes with.
I really wanted a document of the build process and people had been suggesting I should apply for a while, so I just applied and they were here two days later doing a test shoot – it was all ridiculously quick. The crew were amazing too which really helped, and Kevin was lovely and incredibly supportive throughout."
