NEW SUPPORT FOR BUSINESSES
This month, the South West Design Programme (SWDP) introduces new support for businesses keen to capitalise on the benefits of sustainable design.
“Two thirds of people buy from environmentally responsible companies.” YouGov survey 2009
Sustainability may not be ‘new’ news, but it does offer real rewards. It’s likely that many of your clients will already recycle and be working to reduce energy use wherever possible. However, are they aware that by redesigning products or services they can make substantial savings – financially and environmentally?
The potential for a business to improve sustainability through its products and services lies in the early (design/concept) stages of a project. According to Design Council research 80% of the environmental impact of any product or service is set once this phase is complete.
“1 in 7 shun products based on poor environmental reputation.” YouGov survey 2009
The incentives are clear. There is increasing consumer interest in ‘responsible’ companies, B2B contracts often now contain environmental criteria, legislation is tightening and new markets for sustainable products and services are opening up.
So what should a company do? The options are many and varied and it can be confusing, time consuming and costly to embark on a project without a clear strategy. Should your clients eliminate the waste, get carbon label accreditation, replace their product with a service, become FairTrade, start a green marketing campaign, offer a take-back service or use a different technology?
An expert solution
SWDP can provide a Design Adviser to work face-to-face with a business for up to five days. They will identify business aims and objectives, and work with your clients to discover where sustainable design opportunities lie. A project brief is generated and suitable design agencies in the region, with the right expertise, can be found. The service is free to use. Please download the service offer here.
Who is eligible?
Suitable businesses can come from any sector, except retail and agriculture, fisheries and forestry. However, ideal candidates will have:
- Plans to expand
- An interest in exploring sustainability as an opportunity
- A need for new communications materials, product improvements, new packaging, branding, interiors or website development
- Funds to invest in the agreed sustainable design project – minimum budget £3K, but businesses with the capability and ambition to invest £10K or more achieve the best results.
